TV Week reports
Actress Jessica Marais has revealed for the first time why she wanted to turn her back on TV following Packed To The Rafters.
The multiple Logie-winning star, whose turn as Rachel Rafter on the top-rating Aussie drama made her a household name, says her latest project — playing Lily Diamond in epic US production Magic City — has been eye-opening.
"When I arrived and saw the set, I started to cry and ran into the dressing room and called my mum," the 26-year-old says.
"I said, 'I don't think I can do this!' Rafters was great, but we had a little bathroom and dishwasher."
Jessica exited our screens during tearful scenes in August, and has since been shacked up in Miami with fiance and former on-screen love James Stewart by her side.
"It worked out that his [Rafters] hiatus fell exactly when I was filming, so we're trying to enjoy it because it may not happen again!" she says.
As for ditching TV, the newly brunette beauty says her plan was to seek out big-screen roles not small-screen ones.
"I'd just come off a TV show and wanted to do film and theatre," Jessica explains.
"But with cable TV here, it's surpassed film in a lot of ways, because you get to live with these characters for long periods of time and tell interesting stories. When you work on such an amazing set and wear such amazing clothes, it helps enormously. You don't have to imagine you are in the 1950s, because you feel as though you are!"
