Fred Schepisi’s Australian film, The Eye of the Storm has been awarded the special jury prize at the Rome International Film Festival.
In a shift from tradition, two films were recognised and awarded the jury prize at this year’s festival. Alongside The Eye of the Storm, French film See How They Dance by Claude Miller was also awarded the prize.
“We’re so thrilled at this international recognition for the film and in particular for Australia’s master filmmaker, Fred Schepisi,” said producer Antony Waddington on hearing about the win.
The Eye of the Storm won the award for Best Australian Film at the Melbourne International Film Festival earlier this year and is one of the highest grossing Australian films of the year, with its box office earnings expected to pass $1.6 million this weekend.
Based on Patrick White’s Nobel Prize winning novel, The Eye of the Storm is a savage exploration of family relationships — and the sharp undercurrents of love and hate, comedy and tragedy, which define them and is the first feature film Schepisi has made in Australia since the Oscar nominated Evil Angels in 1988.
