Sydney Unplugged celebrates Sydney with 12 acclaimed film makers.
Giles Hardie, The Sydney Morning Herald, reports
Paris got je t'aime'd, New York got I love you'd, now Sydney is going to get unplugged.
Some of Australia’s most exciting and acclaimed filmmakers are making Sydney a major movie character on the big screen, in a film aptly named Sydney Unplugged.
Self-described "Sydney aficionado" John Polson hatched the idea for the film when he met Gary Hamilton at the Cannes Film Festival in May. "It's no secret some hugely talented directors, actors and others either live here or are from here," Polson said in a statement.
"It's about time this talent got together to tell stories that showcase one of the world's most beautiful cities. The people that have stepped up to take part in this project are beyond our wildest dreams."
To be shot in the second half of 2012, Sydney Unplugged will comprise twelve stories, each helmed by a different director, featuring big name actors in a geographically overlapping vignette style that has proven popular recently in the films Paris Je T'aime and New York, I Love You.
Producers John Polson (Tropfest, Swimfan), and Gary Hamilton (A Few Best Men), have assembled a depth and diversity of Australia’s filmmaking talent, both behind and in front of the camera that would excite any Hollywood casting director.
The list of those already attached to the project include Filmmakers Alex Proyas (Knowing), David Michôd (Animal Kingdom), Ivan Sen (Toomelah), John Curran (The Painted Veil), Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here), Liev Schreiber (Everything is Illuminated), Rachel Ward (Beautiful Kate), Ray Lawrence (Lantana) and Russell Crowe (Texas). They will be joined by actors Anthony LaPaglia and Toni Collette in their directorial debuts, in creating the twelve stories that will make up Sydney Unplugged.
Sydney Unplugged will according to the statement "illustrate the vibrant and unique cultural and social tapestries of life in one of the world’s most beloved and inspiring cities."
The film will be announced at this Sunday's Tropfest and released in Australian cinemas by Icon Film Distribution in 2013.
