The Herald Sun reports
George Michael has quietly slipped into Australia with his new boyfriend as he continues to recover from a near-fatal bout of pneumonia.
Speaking for the first time since a spell in hospital with illness in Italy last November the pop icon told Confidential yesterday he was "all but" better and hoped to be back on stage soon.
The illness forced the cancellation of tour dates around the world, including Australia, and raised concerns for his life.
"I don't know if you heard, but I nearly died," he said after lunching at Sydney restaurant Otto Ristorante.
"I'm feeling great ... everything's back in check."
Confirming he is "just holidaying" after shelving his April Symphonic concert dates, the 48-year-old singer hinted: "I'll be here a couple of weeks ... I may be back for Mardi Gras. We'll see."
It's understood the former Wham! frontman and his model boyfriend, Fadi Fawaz, flew in from the Maldives about a week ago.
Michael - who needed a $150,000 specially made bed to help him breathe during his time in hospital - has been avidly tweeting about his recovery.
