The Herald Sun reports
AUSTRALIAN film great Don McAlpine has been awarded the country's highest screen accolade for his work on films including Moulin Rouge, Patriot Games and Romeo + Juliet.
The Oscar and BAFTA nominated cinematographer will be handed the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Raymond Longford gong at this month's AACTA awards.
McAlpine is known for his work on some of Australia's best loved classics, including Don's Party and Breaker Morant.
A former physical education teacher, in recent years the 77-year-old has become one of Hollywood's most in-demand film artists, working on X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Predator and Moulin Rouge among others.
McAlpine will receive the first ever AACTA award this Sunday at a lunch in Sydney, attended by a who's who of Australian screen.
Previous recipients of the accolade, when known as the AFIs, include Peter Weir, Geoffrey Rush, Fred Schepisi, Jack Thompson and Charles "Bud" Tingwell.
The three-time AFI winner said the latest award was a "great personal honour".
"I am thrilled with the honour it implies to the art and craft of Australian cinematographers," he said.
AACTA chief Damian Trewhella said McAlpine was the perfect candidate for the award.
"With more than 50 films to his name, three AFI awards, one Academy Award nomination and two BAFTA nominations among other accolades, McAlpine is truly an Australian artist of international standing," he said.
