The Olivia Newton-John Centre is continuing to blaze trails to help support men through their prostate cancer treatment.
David Gray is one of only three prostate cancer nurses in Victoria, providing patients with information, while co-ordinating their care and assisting them with specialist services.
The 27-year-old said he was honoured to take on the role, which will be funded for three years by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, thanks to money raised by the Movember initiative.
Mr Gray, who is doing a Masters in urology and continence nursing, said he had spent the past six years working as a surgical nurse at the Austin hospital, but jumped at the chance to take on the specialised position.
"There is a big need for this," Mr Gray said.
"My role is to help them and their families understand what happens during treatment, including things like the potential side effects of their treatments.
"I'm building it from the ground up, it is a very exciting time for the hospital, a new role in a new facility and it will benefit everyone," he said.
Mr Gray said prostate cancer awareness had grown substantially in recent years with the highly publicised battles of sporting names, including Sam Newman and David Parkin.
"It's especially important if men have a history of prostate cancer in their family," he said.
