The Daily Telegraph reports
The Great Gatsby's hopes of a 2013 Oscar berth have been skittled, with
Warner Bros announcing yesterday the release of Baz Luhrmann's latest offering
has been postponed.
Initially
slated for a big Christmas Day release in the US, the period flick - shot in
Sydney and starring Leonardo DiCaprio - will now open "mid 2013"
during the US summer blockbuster season.
It is
understood the film, which is currently in post-production at Cutting Edge
studios in Chippendale, suffered significant delays during shooting after rain
halted production several times earlier this year.
What the new
release date means for the flick's Oscar hopes is yet to be seen, however
studios generally favour end-of-year releases for Academy Award contenders to
keep the film fresh in the minds of Academy voters.
A mid-year
release, while potentially good for box-office revenue, is generally seen as a
death knell for any Oscar hopefuls with the films largely forgotten come awards
season.
The first
trailer for Luhrmann's 3D period reboot sparked an international sensation when
it was released online back in May, with fans and critics declaring the first
glimpses of the anticipated ensemble drama an early success.
Yesterday's
delay announcement was made via a statement from Warner Bros Pictures'
president of domestic distribution, Dan Fellman.
"Based on
what we've seen, Baz Luhrmann's incredible work is all we anticipated and so
much more," he said.
"We think
moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure
this unique film reaches the largest audience possible."
Luhrmann's
adaptation of the F Scott Fitzgerald classic novel, starring DiCaprio, Tobey
Maguire and Carey Mulligan, was due to be released on January 10 in Australia.
