Vanessa Keys, The Daily Telegraph, reports
Rumours that box office smash hit Red Dog will be adapted into a stage spectacular were confirmed today, with the film's producer Nelson Woss joining forces with acclaimed stage producer John Frost.
The true story of the globe-trotting kelpie dog makes “perfect fodder for the stage'', said Frost, the man behind musical hits Annie, Doctor Zhivago, Chicago and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
“Not only does it showcase this beautiful country, but it presses all the right emotional buttons,'' he said. “It's an iconic Australian story that needs to have another life.''
With preliminary workshops slated to start in the next three months, the hunt is on to find the perfect kelpie for the role.
Koko the dog may have won accolades for his star turn in the film but Frost remains close-lipped on whether he'd pass muster for the stage role.
“I'd let him audition but he may be a bit past it,'' he said. “Maybe Koko will have offspring by then. I'd certainly like him to walk the red carpet at the opening.''
No dates have been announced, but fans should anticipate a wait of up to three years.
