Sunrise's rating success was a fluke as Seven's popular pairing was accidental

Debbie Schipp, The Sunday Telegraph, reports

They’re riding high in the ratings, but Sunrise co-hosts David Koch and Melissa Doyle nearly never made it as a couch couple.

The Channel Seven duo were put together "by mistake" because Chris Reason had to take time off to fight cancer.

"Basically because it was a mistake that we came together, we can't believe we are still doing it 10 years later," Koch tells us.

When Sunrise first went to air in 2002 it was plummeting in the ratings. It is now the nation's breakfast show of choice.

"We formed the team because no one cared," Koch says.

"At the time, executives at Seven had no interest in us whatsoever for the first three years and we could do whatever we liked."

Fast-forward to 2012 and Sunrise is reveling in top ratings and big-event television.

And, in the breakfast tradition, that can mean big in terms of hard news - think Hurricane Sandy's devastating march into New York, which saw Koch and Doyle ditch their scripts and do a seven-hour continuous broadcast.

Or live recording broadcasts which stop a city - think Usher and Justin Bieber laying siege to Circular Quay and Psy bringing Martin Place to a standstill just weeks ago.

This week sees Sunrise add another big musical name to its outside broadcast concert honour roll, with Coldplay live from outside Sydney Opera House on Thursday morning.

Doyle says the Opera House is the perfect showcase for the live event.

"One of the reasons we picked the Opera House is we want it to be stunning. People around the world will see Coldplay and know that they were performing in Sydney," she says.

"We have been very lucky. There are not many forums on TV now where you can have a concert such as this, include viewers, give away tickets and be so flexible with a schedule."
