The Daily Telegraph reports
He somehow managed to make a self-destructive,
philandering lawyer into an (almost) loveable character and now Richard
Roxburgh's award-winning portrayal of sleazoidlawyer Cleaver Greene in the ABC
TV series Rake is set for the American treatment with US actor Greg Kinnear to
take on the role.
Kinnear will star in a US version of the show to be adapted by Fox and
produced by the Australian team - including Roxburgh - who created the original
series.
Co-creator Peter Duncan will pen the American pilot, which is expected
to be shot early next year. Roxburgh said international recognition for the
low-budget ABC series has been "gratifying".
"What is great is that we created these characters that people
can't seem to get enough and that is a terrific feeling ... it's a great
feeling that people love it and that it has rung people's bells," he said.
"That was what we always wanted to do and it was always our mission so
this recognition has been very gratifying."
The role will be Kinnear's first tilt at a TV series and Roxburgh claims
the Little Miss Sunshine star was the first and only choice for the
role.
"Greg came into the conversation very early on ... he came to us
and said that he had watched the series and loved it," Roxburgh said.
"He just thinks that it is right in his sweet spot and I think he
is a fantastic choice. When his name was first mentioned I remember thinking;
'That is a bloody great idea'."
It's understood the producers have also been approached by networks in
the UK and France.
