Colin Vickery, The Daily
Telegraph, reports
Lisa Gormley has been
through the wringer.
The 28-year-old remains deeply affected by the
death of baby Rocco on Home and Away.
Bianca Scott (Gormley) and Heath Braxton (Dan
Ewing) had spent months caring for their premature and very ill son.
Now they have had to confront every parent's worst
nightmare - the death of Rocco from sudden infant death syndrome.
Gormley and Ewing did extensive research to prepare
for the emotional scenes.
"This is one of the hardest things I've ever
had to research," Gormley says.
"It is something (the death of a child) you
hope will never happen to anyone you know, but unfortunately it has happened to
some of my friends."
SIDS and Kids statistics show there are around 80
SIDS-related deaths each year in Australia.
Another 3000 prenatal and sudden unexpected infant
deaths occur in Australia each year.
Gormley hopes the Home and Away storyline
will get people talking. One million viewers watch the Channel 7 soapie every
night.
"People - even professionals - don't know how
to deal with it. Everyone reacts so differently," she said.
"Human grieving is a very grey area. It needs
to be talked about."
Psychologist Dr Janet Hall agrees.
"It is a sadness which touches many families
and needs to be shared with the community and not suppressed," Dr Hall
says.
Home and Away, Channel 7,
weeknights, 7pm
