Amy Harris and Joel Christie, The Daily Telegraph, report
Star spotters who were thrilled with the prolonged visit of Leonardo DiCaprio are in for a treat, with news his Hollywood successor, Ryan Gosling, is in talks to star in an action flick to be filmed in Australia.
Rumours are rife that Gosling is set to take up the lead role in the Simon West-directed flick Dust And Glory about an American hotshot who faces off against an Aussie legend in a 16,000km car race around the continent.
It's based on the famous 1950s Redex car race trials - an event that likewise went around Australia.
If true, it would confirm reports that Gosling was spied in Melbourne back in June - allegedly meeting with the film's honchos from the production company Top Cat Films, which is based in Elwood in Victoria.
Spies close to the production say Gosling, a known motorsport aficionado who played a stunt driver in Drive and a motorbike specialist in The Place Beyond The Pines, is close to inking a deal to play the lead.
The names of Australians in contention for the local lead have not been released. "I have a huge vision for this amazing 1950s character-driven Australian story," West told Confidential earlier this year.
"It brings legendary figures of what was the toughest, roughest and most dangerous car racing in the world. Cars, the romance, the Australian outback and legendary characters are sure to make this a great film.
"I'm excited to go out and get a high-calibre cast for this movie."
Should Gosling take on the role it's expected filming - to be scattered throughout Australia - would keep him Down Under for several months.
