The Daily
Telegraph reports
The
Australian production of An Officer And A Gentleman: The Musical will live to
see another day, according to its producers, despite reports the musical -
which had its world premiere at the Lyric Theatre on May 18 - will end its
short run on July 1.
A spokesman for super-producer John
Frost yesterday told Confidential plans to tour the show in the US remain on
the table but admitted changes would be made.
He also said producers were willing
to dedicate more time and money to the show, which has been poorly received by
Australian theatre critics.
"It could be a year ... it
could be two more years (in development)," the spokesperson said.
"But An Officer is a
musical that took 12 years to get to this point, so who knows how much longer
it will take to get right."
As for reports the production's
scheduled runs in Brisbane and Melbourne had been skittled, the spokesman said,
officially, no interstate tours had been locked in.
"Brisbane and Melbourne were
only ever talked about. Nothing definite was ever in place," he said.
Changes rumoured included the
addition of one or more musical numbers.
Adapted for the stage by Douglas Day
Stewart - who penned the hit 1982 movie - and Sharleen Cooper Cohen, the $6.5
million production opened at the Lyric last month.
A number of US theatre producers and
owners were in attendance.
The show went on to become somewhat
of a rare flop for Frost, whose theatre credits include Fame, Wicked,
the Broadway production of Hairspray and the West End version of Priscilla,
Queen Of The Desert: The Musical.
