Vicky Roach, The Daily Telegraph, reports
A good-natured Steve Carell made an unexpected
appearance at the Sydney Film Festival on Thursday night after a last-minute
text message from mate and Little Miss Sunshine co-star Toni Collette.
The Hollywood actor was in town promoting animated family film
Despicable Me 2 - unaware his most recent collaboration with Collette, indie
drama The Way, Way Back, was screening at the State Theatre.
When Carell got Collette's message, he surprised her on the theatre's
red carpet after a day of interviews at the Park Hyatt Hotel.
It was his second Australian premiere in two days. Carell, Miranda
Cosgrove and a bunch of minions attended the Despicable Me 2 premiere at Event
Cinemas, Bondi Junction, on Wednesday night.
Carell said he and Collette were old mates: "We got to know each
other even better on this film, because it was shot in (Carell's) home town in
Massachusetts.
"Toni had a little beach house in that area and her baby and her
husband were there. It was really fun, a really nice family time," said
Carell, who has a daughter Annie, 12, and a son Johnny, 8, with wife Nancy
Walls.
Carell plays Collette's overbearing boyfriend in The Way, Way Back. He
said being with her on the red carpet was like deja vu of Little Miss Sunshine
eight years ago.
