Kidman gets ready for the next Oscars with portrayal of Princess Grace of Monaco

As soon as Oscars wrapped up this week, talk quickly turned to next year's gongs and Nicole Kidman's upcoming turn in the Grace Kelly biopic Grace Of Monaco.

Early stills of The Weinstein Company's flick emerged yesterday showing Kidman bearing a remarkable similarity to the late Hollywood beauty.

The 45-year-old portrays the Princess of Monaco in 1962 when she was in her 30s trying to help her adopted country during a time of political turmoil.

The film, which co-stars Tim Roth as Prince Rainier, is set to be released in December - smack bang in the middle of awards season contention. A win for Kidman would bring her Oscar tally to two.

Meanwhile, the sometimes-Sydney based actress gave an interview recently in which she claimed, despite the complaints of some of her peers over the lack of roles for older women in Hollywood, that it is still possible for older actresses to succeed in the film industry, pointing to Emmanuelle Riva, who at 86 received an Oscar nomination this year.

Nobody on The Block, Scott Cam is saying in his best least larrikin voice, was prepared for the "sudden departure" of one of their mates.

Sudden departure? Yikes. That sounds like funeral industry code. It isn't. Mark of Mark and Duncan (you'll notice nobody calls them the Two Fat Tradies anymore, especially not now) has had a "health scare". And sure, none of the contestants probably was prepared for it, but we were. Nine showed select grabs of Monday night's episode, including the ambulance, in a "highlights" package at the start of the series.

So far I've only seen Monday night - when it happens - and Tuesday - the aftershock - but Scott Cam says it's too early to say if it was a "full blown heart attack".

My feeling, based on the show's reaction to it, is it isn't. The fact that Nine promoted it, for one thing. You'd like to think if it was a serious heart attack, or any kind of heart attack, Nine would resist using it as an advertising tool. Plus Mark was upright and functioning and managing a therapeutic lager when Nine had a Block PR event in Melbourne last week.

But look, Nine was in a bad spot here.

Pretend nothing had happened and someone hears about it and they look like they're covering it up. And then they'd have to explain why someone who isn't Mark was working on Mark and Duncan's house.

And spoiler alert: the crisis grows on Tuesday when Phil announces he's decided to lend a hand. Phil who can't drive a nail. Phil's the one most affected by Mark's leaving. "All the boys would come down and we'd all have a beer and a chat and all old school stuff, you know?" Phil's saying this to his wife, Amity.

Drinking with friends is old school? Only to Phil. Clearly part of him has died at some point - was it when he got married to Amity? Or when they moved to Adelaide? Either way, he's not the man to help Duncan finish the house. Duncan's wife Jen isn't either. I'm reminded of Scott Cam's interview with Karl Stefanovic the day The Block started, when he said there was no way he'd do The Block with his wife, or with anyone. So Duncan is sat down in front of a large book of photos and asked to go through it and pick a face, the way they do on Law & Order or, I don't know, eHarmony.

Jen finds she has pressing commitments with their children and after a morning of phone calls for her husband it's with no reluctance she takes off her Mitre 10 T-shirt and leaves the set. This show is always an angle grinder away from a law suit. It's amazing nothing really major has happened on it. Of course, it's not over yet.

Foxtel's Prisoner remake Wentworth makes Underbelly look tame

It’s the fear in the eyes of Bea Smith, formerly known to Australian TV audiences as the terrifying top dog of Cell Block H on Prisoner, that acts like a marker between that series and its new "reimagining,'' Wentworth, coming soon to Foxtel.

The Bea of old was seemingly fearless, ruling the fictional women's detention centre with an iron fist and animal instincts.

This new Bea (played by Underbelly Razor's Danielle Cormack) who is only just beginning her life at Wentworth as scared as a rabbit, a battered wife unaware what easy prey she could become on "the inside".

Her terror, as she sits in the back of paddy wagon is utterly palpable, the moral bankruptcy of some of the inmates, made clear from the first graphic scenes of episode one, screened for media this week and to air on the SoHo channel from May 1.

Since Foxtel first flagged it was reinventing Prisoner about the same time Channel 10 began its run on retro programming (to mixed success), the water cooler chatter about Wentworth has bubbled away like no other program in recent memory.

Prepare now for it to boil over once it premieres, Underbelly like we haven't seen before.

Make no mistake, this is no Vaseline-lensed nostalgia trip but a thoroughly modern new take on the gritty goings-on of a women's prison today.

From the flashes of harsh neon lighting straight out of a Kings Cross shooting gallery, to the clever echo of the iconic Prisoner theme song, this brilliant retelling picks up where the pioneering series left off and then takes the kind of shocking plot detours contemporary TV viewers would expect from award-winning US dramas like Breaking Bad or Sons Of Anarchy.

The old razorwire gang are all back and there's not a weak actor among them: Doreen (played by Shareena Clanton), Lizzie Birdsworth (Celia Ireland), Franky Doyle (Nicole da Silva) and crime matriarch Jacs Holt (Kris McQuade).

The casting of this FremantleMedia production is masterful, especially McQuade, who has the uncanny look of someone who should have been cast in Prisoner.

The screws aren't half bad either, with Logie-winning actress Catherine McClements as Governor Meg Jackson, Underbelly Badness bad arse Aaron Jeffrey (Officer Matthew Fletcher), Looking For Alibrandi's Leeanna Walsman (lawyer Erica Davidson) and Samoan-born star of NZ television Robbie Magasiva (playing Clements' on-screen husband Will Jackson).

Cormack, for one, ought to start writing her Logies speech and bracing for a call from Harvey Weinstein et al as this performance will win her all the plaudits and plum jobs she obviously so richly deserves.

Wentworth premieres on Foxtel's SoHo channel from May 1.

Hugh Jackman misses out on Best Actor award to Daniel Day-Lewis at Oscars

Our last Aussie hopeful Hugh Jackman has narrowly missed out on the award for Best Actor, pipped at the post by Daniel Day-Lewis.

Day-Lewis took out the top award for his leading role in Steven Spielberg's biopic, Lincoln, also beating out Bradley Cooper, Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington.

Jackman was one of the hot contenders tipped to win the award for his leading role in Les Miserables.

Fans took to Twitter to express their thoughts on the result:

"Biggest upset: Hugh Jackman did not win the Best Actor. :(" Twitter user @aMrazing posted.

"What the hell! Hugh Jackman should have won that! Rigged. The Oscars are rigged!" another user fumed.

"I feel bad for Hugh Jackman - delivers the best performance of his career - any other year, he would have won with that amazing performance!" a fan Tweeted.

This marks Daniel Day-Lewis' third Oscar win, becoming the first actor in history to win three Best Actor Oscars.

It's been a less than successful night for Aussie nominees, with Naomi Watts missing out on Best Actress to fan favourite Jennifer Lawrence.

Channel 9 has high hopes for Ellen exclusive

Channel 9 is banking on a major exclusive with Ellen DeGeneres to gazump rival Today Tonight in the early rounds of the primetime ratings race.

Filmed under a cloak of secrecy after A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw was whisked away on a two-day trip to Los Angeles last week, the sit-down interview is being hyped as a "must see" by Nine with producers to air it uninterrupted over 16 minutes tonight - more than half the show's full running time.

The move has left TT "scrambling", according to media sources, for a story to pit against the much-loved talkshow queen.

TT has undergone an overhaul this year, including the well-received introduction of new host Helen Kapalos, and pushed through a disappointing start to consistently eclipse ACA.

Nine, meanwhile, promised DeGeneres will cover subjects she has previously not touched upon.

DeGeneres revealed her decision to come out as a lesbian on her sitcom Ellen in 1997 almost bankrupted her.

"I was so mad that I lost my show, and not just my show but for three years I didn't have any offers," she says. "I mean literally the phone did not ring for three years and I had no money and then you know it was actually ... I am very grateful for that time."

Grimshaw said she was worried how the talk would go.

"I was concerned she would be playing more to them than me, but she couldn't have been more engaging," she said.

TT has taken the lead in the 6.30pm slot in the official ratings season.

It’s 9.30am on Cockatoo Island, the former convict establishment and shipyard sitting on the Parramatta River, and Jennifer Hawkins is on the set of her first major challenge as the new judge on Australia's Next Top Model.

Sparkling in a Toni Maticevski ensemble, the 1.8m glamazon stands much taller in Giuseppe Zanotti heels at the edge of a canal before a narrow plywood plank, which the top 25 contestants are about to attempt in nothing but bikinis.

Hawkins jokes with the crew, many of whom she knows from her days roving on The Great Outdoors, and laughs loudly while trading memories ("Remember that time in Bangkok?").

The alarm went off at 4.45am and hair and make-up knocked on the door of her North Curl Curl compound about 15 minutes later, at which point she pumped up music on the speakers throughout the house and breakfasted on a coffee and half a banana. Yes, half. But later in the morning there is poached eggs and avocado.

It's her first TV gig since Channel 7's disappointing Make Me A Supermodel in 2008, so perhaps nerves ate her appetite.

"I'm not that nervous at all actually - it all feels really comfortable," she says.

"I like being busy and work so much better under pressure, so it's a really happy and exciting time."

With Hawkins known for her thought-out business strategies, encompassing real estate, beauty endorsements and modelling and merchandise deals, where does Top Model fit into the mix?

"I have a greater plan and a bigger picture of what I want to achieve in the long run.

"The main thing we had to consider (about Top Model) was whether we could fit it in. I have a really busy year with Myer and the wedding. But the great thing is that it's so quick. Three months and we're done."

Hawko uses her lunchbreak for a fitting for Myer's autumn/winter fashion parade - in Melbourne on Thursday - and for the Foxtel programming launch happening later on, but squeezes in a chicken salad.

After shooting all afternoon, she is rushed to rehearsals for the night's proceedings.

She squeezes into a hot orange number from French designer Thierry Mugler in time for the 6.20pm red carpet appearance with Charlotte Dawson and Sam Worthington.

Hawkins allows herself a glass of red after the show and chats to me about fiance Jake Wall and their impending nuptials, thought to be taking place in Bali in July.

"He's great, he's doing really well," she smiles. "We can't wait to get married."

A hire car comes about 9pm and whisks her back to the northern beaches.

Win a walk-on role with Ewan McGregor in Australian film Son Of A Gun

Ewan McGregor this week begins work on Australian film Son Of A Gun. And one lucky film buff has a chance to get up close to the big-name movie star.

Director Julius Avery has spent four years working on the film, which this week begins shooting in Kalgoorlie.

"It's all action stations go at the moment," he said.

Son Of A Gun is his first feature and he has partnered with Telstra to offer a walk-on role in the film.

"It's not just about being in front of the camera, but also the experience of meeting the crew and, perhaps, bumping into Ewan," Avery said.

Guy Sebastian ready to bail out of the X Factor

Guy Sebastian is unlikely to return to The X Factor this year, according to widespread TV industry speak.

As the Battlescars superstar prepares for his biggest tour to date, performing more than 40 concerts across the country, well-placed sources say his priorities no longer lie with the Channel 7 talent search.

"He's the best artist (Australia) has - that's clear as day," a TV heavy told Confidential. "He's got this massive tour, the album is still new and then there's America. At the moment he definitely isn't on board (with X Factor). He's done three years and that's plenty."

The rumours follow confirmation that fellow judge Mel B has taken a seat at the panel on America’s Got Talent in LA, throwing in to doubt her return and sparking speculation she will join Nine's local version Australia's Got Talent.

As we reported this week, Mel has packed up her Sydney home and moved to the US.

She is replacing Sharon Osbourne, who is thought to be locked and loaded for AGT here with Chris Isaak.

The other half of The X Factor Australia panel, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Ronan Keating, are expected to reprise their roles on the series, which is in the auditioning stages.

Both Seven and Sebastian's management did not return calls yesterday.

The inaugural Australian Idol winner is the most successful judge on The X Factor and arguably the most popular, having won the last two years with his charges Reece Mastin and Samantha Jade.

Battlescars has brought him some much-wanted attention in America, where the single shot to No.1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Chart.

Life for Myer posterboy Kris Smith has been pretty good since the Mancunian relocated to Australia from the UK.

Although the pretty-boy league player arrived on the arm of celebrity songbird Dannii Minogue, Smith's career hasn't faltered since he and Minogue split 12 months ago.

It is his Myer modelling work that sustains him professionally but Smith has been working steadily in television (most recently hosting Foxtel's Football Superstar series) and is training to become a personal trainer and planning to open his own gym in his Melbourne home town.

Life is sweet for Smith who, between modelling shoots and casual television appearances, is focused on being a hands-on father to his two-year-old son with Minogue, Ethan.

He also plays golf as often as he can, flies to Sydney to hang out with long-distance girlfriend Maddy King and works out daily to stay in buff form.

Yesterday Smith participated in a golf driving competition at Melbourne's Albert Park alongside Harry Kewell, St Kilda star Sam Fisher and World Long Driving champion Joe Miller. And as the XHot, as it's called, is sponsored by Redbull and Smith's new golf sponsor Calloway (see if you can spot a logo ... ), a typically big party followed - not that the disciplined Smith let his hair down and enjoyed an alcoholic beverage.

He was on his 22nd day of booze-free FebFast and a tall glass of alcoholic cider, one of his preferred drinks, had to wait.

Confidential joined Smith in Sydney this week as he worked on his golf swing in preparation.

A typical day in the model's life starts at 6am with a low-carb breakfast - today it's scrambled eggs with chorizo sausage. He consumes this while watching WGC Matchplay golf from Arizona on Foxtel. "Often I start the day with a protein shake," says the lean-as-Kate-Moss mannequin, "but I woke up in a Sydney hotel today so I treated myself to something a bit special and I love watching sport on television," explains the sports nut who took up golf three years ago and is now off a handicap of nine. By 7am he's on the move, to the first of two golf driving ranges in Sydney he's visiting today. There he swings away at his monster 230m-plus drive for an hour. Golf, he admits, has become something of an obsession. He plays regularly in Melbourne with some golf pros who have clearly been offering him some rather excellent advice.

His goal is not to play a major tournament but to whittle his handicap down to scratch.

Smith presented son Ethan with a set of plastic golf clubs at Christmas and beams with pride when talking about how his little bloke has already "played" his first round of nine holes.

"Yeah, he walked the whole way around with me whacking his little plastic ball," Smith says. "He loved it."By mid-morning Smith is on the move to Edgecliff in Sydney's east to catch up with his agent at global sports, fashion and business agency, IMG, David Melina.

Smith was introduced to IMG by his Myer modelling stablemate Lauren Phillips, with whom he was once romantically linked.

At midday he is back behind the wheel of his rental car to catch up with his countrymen, Burgess brothers Tom, George and Luke, South Sydney's hot British league recruits at Coluzzi's cafe in Darlinghurst. "The plan was to have lunch together but they'd already eaten by the time I got to the cafe," he said, only slightly miffed that the siblings wait for no man at mealtime.

Smith, who was once criticised in the media for putting on weight, watches his diet closely these days. A modest chicken caesar salad is all he will have until dinner. A soy latte is his only mid-meal snack today.

By 3pm he is headed to Moore Park Golf Club with one of the Burgess twins. Tom is after some golf instruction and proves an attentive student. He slams and slices away while Smith smashes ball after ball.

Next Smith heads to the gym for his daily daily. He focuses on two muscle groups a day - today it is biceps and back. At last he's through the day's "business" and off to Oxford St, Darlinghurst for a Japanese dinner with girlfriend of six months, model Maddy King.

Only for a twilight Harbour stroll with King does he change out of his golf gear. Bedtime is early. "I'll be in bed by 9."

Sing no sad songs for departing Mel B

Did you spot the photographs of all Mel B's fans thronging to the international airport last week to weep as Scary Spice left our country? No?

That might be because no one did - not one person ... although that's likely because no one knew that Melanie Brown, who does most things with maximum fanfare, was quitting these shores having maximised as many commercial opportunities on these shores as one ageing Spice Girl can.

Weep not for Mel B. She made a lot of money out of Australia through television contracts and weight-loss associations and, like so many international stars before her, she has successfully used our local industry as a launch-pad to re-establish her career.

Thanks to our remote little television industry, Scary is now the second hottest Spice Girl in the world next to Posh, aka Victoria Beckham and her popularity is on the rise again following Thursday's news that she has signed on to replace outgoing judge Sharon Osbourne on America's Got Talent.

It wasn't an earlier guest judging role on the UK version of X Factor that won her the gig, it was the Australian series of the program, pure and simple.

Before coming to Australia, it should be pointed out, Scary was arguably one of the least popular Spice Girls - this was partly due to her crass mouthiness and partly due to her dashing Spice Girls' fans reunion dreams in 1998 by saying of Geri "Ginger" Halliwell's departure: "We are a better group now that she's left, we don't need her anymore."

The messy paternity suit with Eddie Murphy didn't help her any either.

But in 2010 Australia welcomed Scary with open arms just as we welcomed Don Lane in the 1960s, Marcia Hines in the 1970s and more recently Brian McFadden and Leo Sayer.

What is it exactly, that we will miss about Scary?

Will we miss the photos of her lounging in a bikini on a boat on Sydney Harbour with her stay-at-home husband Stephen Belafonte? Probably not, though she may if rumours that Brown cut a deal with a local pap agency to pose up and profit from the pix are to be believed.

Will we miss her bawdy and non-G-rated banter on Dancing With The Stars? Not this mother and viewer who will no longer have to explain Brown's inappropriate comments to her five-year-old.

Will we miss her annual declarations that she is set to snap up a Sydney property and make our city her permanent home? Can't say I will nor likely the real estate agents from whom she attempted to negotiate "celebrity discounts" last year in the belief Sydneysiders would want her as a neighbour.

It's also probably fair to say the Vaucluse neighbours who watched gleefully as Belafonte packed up their rented apartment in Wentworth Ave last week also won't be sorry to see them go.

"You could hear them squabbling with each other while they were exercising," said one.

And so to LA they return and we sincerely hope they are welcomed back with open arms.

Rebel without Jenny Craig cause

She’s never made a secret of her cupcake fetish but after failing to fend off the lure of such fatty treats, the well-rounded Rebel Wilson and Jenny Craig have split.

Wilson's ambassadorial role with the weight-loss giant has ended long before she reached her target goal.

The Aussie actor, who pledged in July 2011 to shed 25kg, managed to drop 15kg, but the contract is over. It's unclear which party ended it.

Wilson, who weighed 106kg at her heaviest, initially said being overweight had affected her work. But it turns out the US film industry has no problem with her size, having cast her in big-budget comedies such as Bridesmaids and What To Expect When You're Expecting.

Last year the 29-year-old was forced to stop dieting for her role as a college student named Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect, but vowed to slim down to 80kg by the end of last year.

"At the moment Rebel is based in the States and is concentrating on her acting career. Due to her busy work schedule she is currently not on the JC program," Jenny Craig's Amy Smith said.

"She successfully lost 15 kilos and thanks Jenny Craig for their help and support."

The company's current Australian ambassador Mel B lost 15kg after signing up following the birth of her third child in October 2011 and continues to feature in its marketing campaigns.

Barry Humphries, Ian "Dicko" Dickson and Magda Szubanski have all shed weight as ambassadors for Jenny Craig.

Meanwhile, rival company Weight Watchers last month announced it had signed Mahalia Barnes as its new celebrity face.

Wilson has two films set for release this year - US comedy Pain & Gain starring Mark Wahlberg and Super Fun Night, a TV movie she wrote and produced.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley has revealed her latest health fight - shedding light on Australia's crippling vitamin D deficiency - came after making the shock discovery she was herself a statistic.

The sparkling TV star, who beat breast cancer last year, has spoken about her new vigilance about osteoporosis after her oncologist confirmed she had dangerously low vitamin D levels and was at risk of the same bone disease which plagues her elderly mother.

Kennerley, an active golfer and daily walker, admitted she "genuinely thought I was doing enough to remain healthy but what I did not realise was that my commitment to sun safety was actually preventing me from obtaining the adequate and safe levels of UV exposure needed for overall health.''

The Channel 7 personality, who has just returned from the US where she filmed her third story for the current affairs program, Sunday, warned those who don't "get a grip and get some sun'' would face the early on-set and pain associated with brittle bones.

Raising awareness about the surprising health issue affecting the sunburnt country, Kennerley said an extreme attitude to the "slip slop slap'' message was putting many Australians at risk.

New research has revealed close to half of Australian women over the age of 40 cover up or get no sun exposure - the very same group now at most risk of vitamin D deficiency and osteoporosis.

The first national study of Australian adults over the age of 25 found osteoporosis affects nearly one million people nationwide, while 22 per cent of Aussie men and 39 per cent of women were vitamin D deficient.

The risks increase significantly with age, with the overweight and surprisingly, the highly-educated (who appear welded to being overly "sun smart'').

Kennerley said the cure was as simple as a walk in the park.

"A lot of people now walk in the morning or afternoon for a bit of exercise, so you don't have to wear suncscreen at 8 or 9 in the morning. And that's your daily dose. It's not hard.''

Rob Mills puts Stephanie Rice romance rumours to bed

Musical theatre cutie Rob Mills has hosed down rumours of a blossoming romance with his Celebrity Apprentice co-star, Stephanie Rice.

Reports from the set of the Channel 9 series say the pair - who are the youngest of this year's line-up - have struck up a relationship and even enjoyed a recent sleepover at Mills's house.

However the Legally Blonde: The Musical lead said the swimmer was simply a girl who is his friend.

"I know there have been a few rumours flying around about me and Steph but honestly there's nothing going on between us," Millsy told Confidential yesterday.

"I think because we're spending so much time together in such close quarters that it's easy for talk to start.

"We go to the same gym so that's how we know each other."

The one-time Australian Idol contestant also addressed a separate report that he started seeing a woman in the cast of Legally Blonde.

"No, no - I dated someone that I worked with when I did Wicked for two years and I learnt my lesson that time," he said. "I try not to date people that I work with."

Asked who the mystery woman was, Mills turned uncharacteristically quiet and coy.

"Let's not go there."

The former Young Talent Time host said he came close to turning down Apprentice, which is currently filming.

"I actually wanted to take a break between the Sydney and Brisbane leg of Legally Blonde," he said.

"But the producers came to me and said, 'look we really want you to be a part of it' and I was like, 'hmm, I dunno'. But I just decided why not, because it's unlike anything I've ever tried," Mills said.

Sam Worthington last night revealed the unlikely source that got him into showbiz while supporting the world's largest short film festival, Tropfest.

Walking the black carpet in Sydney's The Domain last night, the Hawaii-based actor told Confidential it was Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon 2 that first infected him with the acting bug.

"I remember seeing it and watching these two guys having so much fun and I just thought, wow, they're getting paid to do this. How can I get a job like that?" he said.

While the annual event was focused on finding film industry up-and-comers, the question we most wanted to know was when the cameras will start rolling on Avatar 2.

"Honestly your guess is as good as mine," Wortho shrugged. "All I know is that when (director James Cameron) is ready his guys will come and get me and we'll all get started."

"I am really looking forward to returning to that role though. Filming that was the most amazing two years of my life."
