It seems Neil Mooney's first major move as Seven's head of current affairs was to axe Matt White as the host of Today Tonight.
It is believed just days after Mooney began in the role last month he fired the TT host after hearing he wasn't exactly Mr Popular with viewers.
Insider understands the decision to remove White came as a shock to the presenter, who had no plans to leave the show despite a statement saying it was his decision. White still remains at Seven.
"Bring on the V8 Supercars this weekend, and then a holiday. Then, it's time to play somewhere else, so watch this space," White said in the statement last month.
Seven refused to comment and Mooney declined to be interviewed about his plans for the flagship program.
Insider understands Mooney plans to relaunch Today Tonight next year with a batch of new reporters in the hope of injecting more serious journalism into its stories.
It is expected to bear similarities to A Current Affair when it was hosted by Jana Wendt in the '80s.
