Vicky Roach, The Daily Telegraph, reports
The director of The Sapphires, Wayne Blair, has been tipped by Variety as one of 10 directors to watch.
While the film's scheduled early 2013 release date means it won't qualify for this year's Golden Globe or Academy Awards, the nod from the influential trade magazine gives the indigenous musical extra sparkle in the tough American market.
Blair's raised profile will be a useful tool in specialist distributor The Weinstein Company's marketing strategy, especially on the back of the film's three audience choice awards at the recent St Louis, Aspen and Denver film festivals.
Blair, who is currently shooting ABC TV series Gods of Wheat Street near Lismore in northern NSW, heads off to the Dubai Film Festival later this week where The Sapphires has been selected to screen in the prestigious closing night film slot.
The Taree-born filmmaker's feature film debut has taken $14.3 million at the Australian box office and recently picked up an impressive 12 nominations at this year's AACTA Awards, including best film, best director, best actor (Chris O'Dowd) and best actress (Deborah Mailman) and best supporting actress (Jessica Mauboy).
