Soap idol Johnny Ruffo under the knife after appendicitis

The Daily Telegraph reports

Adolescent idol Johnny Ruffo was a no-show on the set of Home & Away yesterday after being rushed to hospital with a serious case of appendicitis.

The pop singer, who made a name for himself after appearing on The X Factor, then by winning Dancing With The Stars, was taken to hospital to have his appendix removed after experiencing excruciating stomach pains on Sunday evening.

The 25-year-old newbie actor, who plays Chris Harrington on the soapie, told Confidential he has been forced to take time off from the show following the operation.

"I'm fine, I'll be back at work in a couple of days," Ruffo said from his hospital bed.

A Channel 7 spokeswoman said Ruffo was in good hands and will be back on the Summer Bay set shortly.

"Johnny is recovering well and we look forward to having him back on set," she said.

Despite being cooped up in hospital, Ruffo still managed to keep his fans up to date on the release of his latest single.

"Not long now #untouchable can be pre-ordered on the 21st of June on iTunes," he posted from his Twitter account yesterday.

His latest hospital visit is the second in as many months.

Ruffo was a recent visitor to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick in the city's eastern suburbs to spend time with 10-year-old patient Jamieson Leeson, who had undergone spinal surgery.

Home and Away hunk Richard Brancatisano lands Hollywood gig in Chasing Life

Jonathon Moran, The Daily Telegraph, reports

Home and Away actor Richard Brancatisano has landed his first Hollywood gig after his Terminales pilot has been given the go-ahead by America's ABC network.

The show, which has changed its name to Chasing Life, also stars Haley Ramm, Italia Ricci and Mary Page Keller and has been picked up for a 13 episode run from next January.

Brancatisano is known here in Australia for playing Prince Vittorio Seca on Home and Away, and has had roles in Underbelly: Razor and White Collar Blue.

Chasing Life is an adaptation of a Mexican television series and tells the story of a young female newspaper reporter trying to balance her busy life. Brancatisano plays the brooding romantic male lead, Dominic.

Westside story for our Lincoln Lewis

The Daily Telegraph reports

Lincoln Lewis is growing up fast.

The 25-year-old has gone from Home & Away hunk to Hollywood actor after starting to shoot his first big role in the United States.

The son of rugby league great Wally Lewis was spotted yesterday working on the set of Westside, a modern TV retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

The Brisbane boy, who has been in Tomorrow, When The War Began and Australian dramas SLiDE, Underbelly and Tricky Business since leaving the soap in 2010, plays the lead in the show. It's about two warring families in Venice Beach. Another former Summer Bay resident, Luke Bracey, appears as Lewis' brother.

Although American TV networks commission dozens of pilots at this time of year only to go ahead with a select few, Westside has a lot going for it, including the flamboyant McG, who directed the Charlie's Angels big-screen remakes and Terminator: Salvation.

Lewis will also appear in Will Smith's new flick After Earth, out in June.

Melissa George's wish comes true

Ros Reines, The Daily Telegraph, reports

Former Summer Bay star Melissa George desperately wishes everyone would forget about her four-year as Angel Parrish on Home and Away.

Not a problem, according to the soap's latest recruit, Kassandra Clementi.

Despite being a fan of the Seven staple, the 21-year-old actress, who joins the cast as teen runaway Maddy from January 24, said she hadn't the faintest idea who the grumpy Logie winner was.

"No, I'm sorry, that name is not familiar to me," she confessed.

George, 36, caused a kerfuffle in November, attacking Australia as "disgusting for constantly aligning" her with the drama that launched her career.

While Clementi has tasted success in the US, playing opposite Christian Slater in the film, Hatfield's & McCoy, and movie F6 Twister with Casper Van Dien, she was happy to return to Australia.

"I was homesick and I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to join this fantastic series," she said.

Her ambition is to turn Maddy into one of the most loved characters in Summer Bay.

That Dannii Minogue rumour a bit Ruffo for Johnny

The Daily Telegraph reports

Home and Away newcomer Johnny Ruffo has denied a relationship with newly-single TV star Dannii Minogue after they were said to have hooked up at an afterparty this year.

While the X Factor sprite and Australia's Got Talent judge were believed to have got together at the Dancing With The Stars wrap party, Ruffo yesterday maintained the relationship was all rumour. "I was talking to her after I performed but we just had a chat - nothing else," he told Confidential. "That's definitely one of (the rumours) that aren't right."

The Summer Bay stud, off to LA in January to work on his debut album, stripped in Pitt St Mall yesterday for the launch of Jay Jay's watches.

And he wasn't worried about it at all. "As long as you stay healthy and fit, it's not a particularly hard thing to do," he said. "I try to go to the gym every spare chance I get and try not to eat carbs."

Ruffo said he was currently single.

Dieter Brummer wanted producers to kill him off Home and Away to escape Melissa George

News.com.au reports

Former Home and Away star Dieter Brummer says he loathed Melissa George's diva-like demands so much that he begged producers to kill him off the show.

Brummer, who played George's lover in the family soap says the tension on set was so bad that he no longer wanted to star alongside her.

“We may have been love interests on the show but the chemistry was far from real!” Brummer told Woman's Day.

“Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the outset. I think she wanted to be the next Kylie Minogue. She was a big fan and she aspired to be a big star just like Kylie. I don’t think she had much time for the cast of Home And Away.”

The actor, who has since found fame in Channel Nine's Underbelly says he hasn't spoken to George in the 17 years since he left the show.

The actor's comments come in the wake of George's recent outburst in which she reportedly threatened to walk off the set of The Morning Show if they referenced her Home and Away character.

The mag says Brummer is still "rolling around laughing" after her rant.

“I think they were unnecessary and a bit ridiculous – but then that’s Mel,” he added.

By George, it's a bad week best forgotten for Melissa

The Daily Telegraph reports

She’s been heaped with a lot of hate this week from Home and Away purists and the bad news just keeps coming for Melissa George.

In a chain of events she will likely want to forget, the Perth native has had her latest project espionage TV series Hunted axed following a disastrous ratings drop.

In a further blow, George's Wikipedia page was hacked into yesterday, with the names of some of the characters she's previously played mischievously changed to "Angel", the part she all-but renounced this week.

The Paris-based 36-year-old was besieged by angry messages after an outburst on The Morning Show, saying she is sick of the Australian media bringing up her Summer Bay days because of her many other acting accomplishments.

Unfortunately Hunted was not one of them, with the eight-part series losing two million viewers following its debut on the BBC in the UK.

It's a bad sign for SBS, who have planned to premiere the show on November 24.

Wikipedia did not respond to calls for comment on the changes to George's page. As of last night the new "Angel" mentions had not been removed.

Plenty have spoken out again George's extraordinary comments.

Former Home and Away actor Dominic Purcell (of Prison Break fame) said the outburst was "uncalled for and immature".

"Just get humble for f ***'s sake," he said.

"See it for what it is."

Actor Brendan Cowell also had a minor stab at Twitter.

"I played Colt Jackson, lead singer of the band Monkey Jam, in three episodes of Home and Away in 1998 and no one ever brings it up, sadly," he wrote.

Tyler Atkins takes Samara Weaving off the market

Amy Harris and Joel Christie, The Daily Telegraph, report

She has been linked to almost every single man in Sydney since her split from her Home And Away co-star Axel Whitehead but Confidential can reveal Samara Weaving has started dating model turned actor Tyler Atkins.

Despite some reports suggesting Weaving had taken a liking to X-Factor alumnus turned Summer Bay inhabitant Johnny Ruffo, she has been on several dates with Atkins, who has hit the singles market after ending a brief relationship with designer Kym Ellery.

The pair are said to be "taking things slowly" according to a friend, with their relationship in its earliest of stages.

Atkins, who made his acting debut this year on Ten's Puberty Blues, has dated some of Sydney's most stunning women and is believed to have also had a very fleeting fling with uber-socialite Paris Hilton.

Ruffo, meanwhile, is not lacking female admirers either.

The sometime singer is believed to have enjoyed some time with Dannii Minogue the night he won Dancing With The Stars in June.

According to spies at the wrap party for the Melbourne-based show, the two were "very keen" on each other.

Melissa's no Angel, by George

The Daily Telegraph reports

Actress Melissa George is your run-of-the-mill child sensation who has rarely been without positive press.

A champion rollerskater and model in her early years, she moved from Perth to Sydney at 16 to play troubled teen Angel Parrish on Home and Away, almost immediately becoming a household name thanks to her on-screen love-fest with dreamboat Dieter Brummer.

George is an odd person to interview.

Very comfortable with the personal pronoun and unashamed in announcing how well she's done in her life.

Just last month she stressed to Live magazine that she's far from just an actress.

"I'm a multi-million-pound inventor," she said.

"A few years ago, I came up with something that enables women to alter hemlines.

"That product has turned over $15 million in the past 10 months."

But George's assault on the Australian media at the weekend for constantly referring back to the character that made her a star came off as superfluous and self-absorbed.

From a reporting perspective, the title George is often given is chosen on behalf of readers and viewers, and how they are most likely to identify with a subject.

When Daniel Radcliffe is 40 he will still be the much-loved Harry Potter.

As irritating as that may be for him, you can only change your claim to fame by bettering it.

Would you introduce her as Melissa George, who was in Hollywood movie Mulholland Drive (for all of three seconds) or as Melissa George, who was in 300 episodes of Home And Away and won two Logies for it?

It's hardly a "disgusting" personal attack on her admittedly impressive achievements.

It also hasn't had the slightest effect on her career.

The last time we checked, she hasn't been typecast as a street kid since leaving Summer Bay.

And let's not forget that, at 25 years old, Home and Away is a most successful and beloved local production, bringing millions of viewers and international esteem to many who have appeared on it - including Naomi Watts, Heath Ledger, Simon Baker, Isla Fisher, Chris Hemsworth and Ryan Kwanten.

Surely, there was a much more graceful way for her to express how she felt.

Axel Whitehead and Samara Weaving remain close friends after separating

Actor Alex Whitehead

Amy Harris and Joel Christie, The Daily Telegraph, reports

Home and Away's Axel Whitehead has spoken for the first time of his split with former castmate Samara Weaving after Confidential reported the couple went their separate ways recently.

The high-profile twosome confirmed romance rumours back in July though it's understood their relationship - which blossomed on set - fizzled after a few months.

But it seems there are no hard feelings between the pair with Whitehead describing Weaving as a "great, great friend".

"Samara and I have a great amount of respect for each other and I think we'll always be very close," Whitehead said, adding that there was no one new in his life despite being spied recently with an attractive brunette.

"Nope. I'm definitely single," he said.

Meanwhile, the actor and occasional musician will have something to keep his mind off the break-up over the next two weeks - he is planning a solo motorbike ride through central Australia which he says was inspired by Ewan McGregor's famous road flick Long Way Down.

"I've managed to get a two-week holiday break which is great and this is something that I have wanted to do for a really long time. And I am so, so excited," he said.

Tough experience close to Home for Lisa Gormley

Lisa Gormley hopes her that character's story in Home and Away will get people talking. Source: Supplied

Colin Vickery, The Daily Telegraph, reports
Lisa Gormley has been through the wringer.
The 28-year-old remains deeply affected by the death of baby Rocco on Home and Away.
Bianca Scott (Gormley) and Heath Braxton (Dan Ewing) had spent months caring for their premature and very ill son.
Now they have had to confront every parent's worst nightmare - the death of Rocco from sudden infant death syndrome.
Gormley and Ewing did extensive research to prepare for the emotional scenes.
"This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to research," Gormley says.
"It is something (the death of a child) you hope will never happen to anyone you know, but unfortunately it has happened to some of my friends."
SIDS and Kids statistics show there are around 80 SIDS-related deaths each year in Australia.
Another 3000 prenatal and sudden unexpected infant deaths occur in Australia each year.
Gormley hopes the Home and Away storyline will get people talking. One million viewers watch the Channel 7 soapie every night.
"People - even professionals - don't know how to deal with it. Everyone reacts so differently," she said.
"Human grieving is a very grey area. It needs to be talked about."
Psychologist Dr Janet Hall agrees.
"It is a sadness which touches many families and needs to be shared with the community and not suppressed," Dr Hall says.

True blue? It's in my blood

Craig Mathieson, The Sydney Morning Herald, reports
Not Suitable for Children shows that Hollywood may call, but Ryan Kwanten won't put Australia in the back seat, writes Craig Mathieson.
There have been so many Australian actors relocating to Hollywood over the past 10 years that there's probably a special window at Los Angeles airport's passport control for them. Some go into movies, following the lead of Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts, while others find success amid the US's bountiful television industry. But what really divides them is their attitude to working in Australia: some come back and some don't.

Ryan Kwanten is among the former. The one-time Home and Away star fetched up in Los Angeles in 2002 and struggled for several years, at one point sleeping in a motel storeroom for three months to make ends meet. But in 2008 he landed the role of Jason Stackhouse, a libidinous southerner in Alan Ball's lusty supernatural romp True Blood on the leading cable network HBO.

The show was a hit, and remains so as its fifth season airs. But in his hiatus from production each year, Kwanten has tried to return to Australia to star in an independent local film. There's been a modern western in Patrick Hughes' Red Hill, the idiosyncratic fantasy Griff the Invisible and now the Gen Y romantic comedy Not Suitable for Children. You can't fault Kwanten's dedication to local filmmaking.

''I really enjoy it,'' he says. ''There's the obvious connection I have with Australia, but beyond that we have some of the most talented filmmakers, technicians and actors that the world has to offer. It's not just my duty to come back and work, I get a lot out of it. It means a lot more to me to do something like Not Suitable for Children than a $100 million Hollywood epic.''

It's 11.30pm in Los Angeles and Kwanten is driving home along California's 405 freeway, having just finished a day's work on True Blood. The difference between an American cast and an Australian one, he says, exists off-camera; camaraderie comes quickly on a local production.

That helped in Not Suitable for Children, the story of three twentysomething housemates in Sydney's inner west - the coasting Jonah (Kwanten), no-nonsense Stevie (Sarah Snook) and the eccentric Gus (Ryan Corr) - whose lives revolve around a weekly for-profit house party. When circumstances dictate that Jonah will only be able to procreate for another month, he is determined to find a way to become a father.

''Everyone makes a snap judgment at the beginning of this film that they think they know Jonah, but they don't,'' Kwanten, 35, says. ''I can speak from personal experience - anyone who's gone through a traumatic time can - but it's not until you go through life-defining moments that you realise who you really are and how valuable the people around you are.''

It's a reactive role, defined by offbeat humour and an underpinning melancholy that Kwanten enjoyed expanding with writer Michael Lucas (television's Offspring) and first-time feature director Peter Templeman.

As with his roles in Red Hill and Griff the Invisible, it's a world away from Jason Stackhouse. ''Michael's script gave me the opportunity to do something different from what I've done before,'' Kwanten says.

''For me, personally, there couldn't be anything more uninspiring than playing the same character over and over again. I like to pride myself on breaking out of the pigeonhole that I might put myself in, let alone the industry. If you take a risk you might fall on your feet or fall on your arse, but you have to keep trying.''

Not Suitable for Children is now screening.

Isabelle Cornish to follow older sister actress Abbie Cornish by signing with US talent agency United

The Daily Telegraph reports

The little sister of Australian acting star Abbie Cornish, is set to follow in the well-heeled footsteps of her older sibling by signing with US talent powerhouse UTA (United Talent Agency).

The 17-year-old Sydney up-and-comer Isabelle Cornish - who got her first big break on Home and Away - recently wrapped a major role in Ten's Puberty Blues and is heading overseas to audition for US film and TV projects.

Cornish has also filmed small roles in Rescue: Special Ops and the kids TV series Dance Academy.

The coup comes as the demand for Aussie actors reaches new heights in the US with a swathe of talent recently following the same path from Australian agent to major US representation.

They include WAAPA grad Ben O'Toole (who signed with William Morris Endeavor Entertainment) and NIDA grad Ross Langley (UTA) as well as established actors Sullivan Stapleton (WME), Callan Mulvey (Creative Artists Agency) Rodger Corser (WME) and Ben Mendel- sohn who signed with CAA.

Stapleton, who nabbed his break-out role in Animal Kingdom, recently wrapped the action series Strike Back and is set to travel to Bulgaria to begin shooting the sword and sandal 300 sequel Battle Of Artemisia.

"It's a great time for Australian actors because the relationships between Australian talent agencies and the US agents is a lot stronger," says United Management's Natasha Harrison, an Aussie-based agent who has helped bridge the gap with American talent stables."It used to be that agents would come out here a couple of times a year and sign one or two NIDA or WAAPA graduates.

"Local agents would be wary of them because they would be worried about losing actors.

"But now we're working together really well."

Actor David Jones-Roberts's character Xavier Austin exits TV drama Home and Away revealing he's moving to Goulburn

The Daily Telegraph reports

An actor, 22, has left Summer Bay after a four-year stay.

David Jones-Roberts' character Xavier Austin exited Channel Seven's Home and Away yesterday saying he was moving to Goulburn.

Jones-Roberts thanked his fans on his Twitter page for their support. He joined Home and Away in 2008, reported website Digital Spy.

"Just wanted to say thanks to all my fans out there for your continued support throughout the years. Truly wouldn't be where I am without you guys," he tweeted.

The 22-year-old then changed his Twitter profile to read: "I'm an Australian actor. Worked on Home and Away, played Xavier Austin. Just waiting on my next gig…"

Jones-Roberts also joked about former co-star Charles Cottier's character Dexter Walker, commenting: "Dex has no friends now."

Hollywood calling Emma Booth

Craig Mathieson, The Age, reports

In the wake of a thrilling swansong, busy Emma Booth is finally heading to the US.

These days it does not take much to get a young Australian actor on the first flight to Los Angeles: a single season on Home & Away or a supporting role in a well-received local feature will generally do the trick. But amid the clamour to be the next Chris Hemsworth or Naomi Watts, Perth-based actor Emma Booth has stayed put.

''Until now, I've been too busy working here to relocate to LA to look for work,'' says the 29-year-old, who is doing a final tour of Western Australia, including a week in Broome and spending some time with her mother in Busselton, before finally making the move. ''For a long time Hollywood was something that had to come later.''

The former teenage model, who first came to attention in 2007's Clubland, has gone from role to role in recent years, doing a diverse pair of television mini-series in the form of the adaptation of Tim Winton's Cloudstreet and Underbelly: The Golden Mile, where she played sex worker turned police recruit Kim Hollingsworth, as well as appearing opposite Clive Owen in Scott Hicks' The Boys are Back.

Booth recently finished her first major American picture, starring opposite Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez and Nick Nolte in the crime thriller Parker, which is directed by Taylor Hackford and due out early next year. Playing the girlfriend of an action hero is usually a thankless task, and Booth was surprised she fit the bill.

''I thought I'd never get the role. When I went to the chemistry audition with Statham there were these three blonde American Barbie dolls sitting outside waiting and I thought that I was wasting my time with my nose ring and tattoos,'' Booth says.

''But Jason and I got on and Taylor was very happy to do something different, too. I had a lot of fun doing the film.''

Her going-away present is the independent Australian thriller Swerve. Released yesterday, it's a taut piece of neo-noir set in the Australian outback. Booth plays the calculating Jina, the wife of hot-head police officer Frank (Jason Clarke), who decides an Iraq war veteran passing through town, Colin (David Lyons), is her best means of extracting her freedom and a bag of illicit money from a dead-end situation.

Veteran filmmaker Craig Lahiff, who covered some of the same dusty ground with Russell Crowe in 1997's Heaven's Burning, offered the part of Jina to Booth without an audition.

She found herself playing the femme fatale, a role where she's acting as a woman who is always acting, which placed her in an esteemed lineage that includes Barbara Stanwyck in Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity and Linda Fiorentino in John Dahl's The Last Seduction.

''To me it was about showing just a little to say a lot. She's also so good at doing this that she doesn't even know when she's lying any more,'' Booth says.

''For me the challenge was staying at this heightened level of emotion for the whole film.''

Because she was a model working in Europe when her friends were finishing high school, it has taken Booth time to establish her dramatic reputation. But in recent years she has segued from one demanding character to the next, switching from baring herself emotionally, and often physically on screen, to chilling out on yoga retreats.

''Am I a hippie? I probably am,'' Booth says. ''I'm certainly self-aware. I love acting, but I also need a very calm part of my life to balance these highly emotional roles. I love being on a set, telling a story, but I have to have something completely different as well to break the spell.''

Swerve is now screening.

Role's a beauty for Home And Away star Thwaites

Brenton Thwaites

J. Mo and Elle, The Sunday Telegraph, report

Yet another former Home And Away actor has landed a big movie role.

Brenton Thwaites, 22, will play Prince Phillip alongside Elle Fanning's Princess Aurora in Disney's big-budget version of The Sleeping Beauty, titled Maleficent.

Angelina Jolie plays the evil fairy witch, Maleficent.

Thwaites has spent the past week in rehearsals for the film, which goes into production at Pinewood Studios in Britain this month.

Of meeting Jolie, Thwaites said from London: "She was lovely - very open and very nice.

"She was very warm to all of us, which is great."

Originally from Cairns, Thwaites is relatively unknown, although that now looks like it could change pretty quickly.

He recently wrapped production on the Hollywood remake of Blue Lagoon with fellow Home And Awayer Indiana Evans.

"Hopefully this will open a few more doors," he said. "We'll see when I go back to LA."

For the record, Thwaites is single.

"I'm just trying to focus on my work at the moment," he said.

Neighbours producers man up, show first ever male gay kiss

Courtney Crane, The Herald Sun, reports

Long-running soap Neighbours has won praise from viewers for finally featuring its first male gay kiss in an episode last night. But is it necessarily justified?

It has it taken 27 years of airtime for producers to man up and tackle the taboo subject, but last night, two male characters shared their first on-screen kiss.

The scene at a house party featured openly gay character Chris Pappas (James Mason) locked in a passionate dance floor kiss with on-screen boyfriend Aidan Foster, played by former Home and Away actor Bob Morley.

Neighbours faced a backlash from talkback callers and conservative groups when a lesbian kiss between schoolgirls Lana Crawford (Bridget Neval) and Sky Mangel (Stephanie McIntosh) aired in 2004, but last night there was praise for the plot from viewers on Facebook and Twitter.

"Well done to @james_mason15 for showing its ok to be gay. Be proud", tweeted one fan.

There was little build-up to the brief and relatively low-key scene, which stayed true to promises by executive producer Susan Bower to treat the kiss like any other on the show.

''It's not sensationalist or token - we are very proud of the way we have done this,'' she said.

Former Home And Away star Holly Brisley sells Bondi Beach penthouse

The Daily Telegraph reports

TIS the season to offload real estate, it seems, with former Home And Away starlet Holly Brisley recently listing her $7 million pad on Bondi's Campbell Parade.

The sprawling, half-floor beachfront penthouse, which Holly Brisley and husband Paul bought off the plan in 2006, is set to make way for a more "family-oriented" house as the couple, who have a two-year-old son Levi, look for more living space.

"We really like the northern beaches and have a lot of friends there but I love Bondi as well - so we're not really sure where we might go next," Brisley told Confidential yesterday.

"But Levi is at the age where he would like a backyard."

The Bondi penthouse, which is listed by Steven Chen at McGrath Real Estate, boasts views from Bondi to Tamarama, has three bedrooms (all with ensuites), state-of-the-art security system, heated limestone flooring and concierge service.

Meanwhile, Brisley can take some heart that a similar unit in her Bondi block, owned by Little Joe designer Gail Elliott and husband Joe Coffey, sold last week after just three weeks on the market.

The 486sq m apartment, which the couple also bought off the plan five years ago for $6.75 million, was listed for $8 million and sold on December 23.

Estate agent Barry Goldman of Raine and Horne Double Bay didn't reveal the sale price yesterday but pointed out the pad was snapped up just a few weeks after its listing date of December 1.

Goldman has also recently offloaded two apartments in Bondi's prestigious Beach House unit complex - for $5 million each.

"It's nice to see that the top end is still moving," he told Confidential.

Colin Vickery, The Telegraph, reports

WHEN Neighbours announced it was introducing its first regular male gay character late last year, executive producer Susan Bower feared the worst.

Chris Pappas, played by newcomer James Mason, was a fairly new addition to the show when the decision was made to reveal he was gay.

It was a brave move because it came the year after Home and Away's controversial lesbian storyline.

Conservative groups were outraged when Home and Away police officer Charlie Buckton (Esther Anderson) romanced and kissed deckhand Joey Collins (Katie Bell).

The decision to create Neighbours' first regular gay character was bound to cause a storm.

"I do believe homophobia is alive and well, and I have no doubt that we will get complaints about it," Bower told the Herald Sun last October.

It is a credit to Australian TV viewers that a year later there has been precious little protest about Chris. Instead, Neighbours' fans have embraced the young mechanic who has had to cope with coming out.

Chris knows the revelation about his sexuality has disappointed his father George (Lliam Amor) but it has liberated him as an individual.

Not everyone in Erinsborough approves.

Last week, Chris was verbally threatened by homophobic customer Warren Burrell (Tony Rickards).

Since then, Chris has been brutally bashed and events in this week's Neighbours finale will put his life on the line.

"Chris is embarrassed that he thinks he was gay bashed and he doesn't want to tell anyone," Mason says.

"He is trying to build a relationship (with his father) but this incident happening, if it revolves around him being gay, just causes more chaos around the fact that he is gay.

"He wants to forget about it. He tells everyone he's fine and that it's not a big deal."

But it is the bashing that finally cements the bond between father and son.

"Once Chris is in hospital, George shows his support and his love," Mason says.

"It makes Chris realise that no matter who he is, the people that love him will be there no matter what."

Mason originally auditioned for Neighbours' character Andrew Robinson but missed out to Jordan Smith. The offer to play Chris came three days later.

Mason, who has a girlfriend, Amy, says he had no qualms about playing a gay character.

"I really liked the character from the beginning and could see there was huge potential for him," Mason says.

"I have a friend who went through what Chris did when he came out so it's really important to me that there is realism to the stories."

Neighbours doesn't use Chris's sexuality to shock. This is no cynical ratings grab. Instead, the soapie digs deeper to show that Chris's sexuality is only one aspect of his personality.

"The good thing about Chris is that he is an ordinary person who is a mechanic and happens to be gay," Mason says.
