Hurrica-V
Tim
Barlass, The Sydney Morning Herald, reports
The
movie will not be released until January, but there is an opportunity right now
to experience a little of the opulence of The Great Gatsby.
An
Edwardian 60-foot ketch which had a supporting role as the yacht of copper
magnate Dan Cody in Baz Luhrmann's version of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic
is up for sale. Hurrica-V was built in 1924 for a Melbourne pastoralist William
Oliver for the sum of £10,000, is now on the market for almost $4 million.
As
part of a refit that took seven years, every bolt in the hull has been replaced
with new bronze, king and queen cabins feature Brazilian mahogany, modern
appliances are concealed and electric halyard and sheet winches can be used to
raise and trim the sails. The boat's owner Steve Gunns, an architect, said the
vessel has ''now got status as a film star''. In World War II the boat was
requisitioned by the navy, stripped of her sailing rig, painted navy grey and
equipped with machineguns and depth charges. She has also come through two
cyclones and a beaching.
Filming
was conducted in one day near Lion Island on Pittwater. The fee for her use was
$15,000, paltry compared with Gatsby star Leonardo DiCaprio's reported fee of
$77 million.
