Blue Wiggle Anthony Field speaks out about depression for Men's Health Week

Sue Dunlevy, The Daily Telegraph, reports

As an entertainer he inspired thousands of children to sing and dance in the aisles but after the concert the Blue Wiggle, Anthony Field, would retire to his dressing room and break down.

Overweight, suffering from clinical depression, crippled by pain from infected teeth and swollen joints and deaf in one ear the children’s entertainer suffered in silence for eight years before finally seeking help.

In Men’s Health Week the man behind the blue skivvy is appealing to other men who are depressed or in pain to speak up, tell a friend, talk to a doctor or ring a helpline to get assistance.

“Ten years ago Murray helped me by saying - are you okay, are you well?” says Field.

“The Australian thing is to keep it in, don’t talk about it, she’ll be right mate but that’s not good.

“Talking to someone is the first step, talk to your friend, then someone professional.”

Field is promoting health fund Medibank Private’s 24/7 helpline and says the anonymity of a phone call is sometimes a good way for men to take the first step to get help.

He says his father kept his health problems from the family.

“My father had a stroke, we took him to the doctor and found out he had prostate cancer. We didn’t know about it,” he said.

Men don’t talk about their health because they feel ashamed it makes them appear weak, that they are letting the team down, he says.

And women can sometimes make it hard for them to speak up.

Field’s wife used to joke that he had selective hearing.

“Women love to say that,” he says.

It turned out Field did, in fact, have a hearing problem and he now wears a hearing aid.

The Blue Wiggle suffered in pain and struggled with depression for eight years before he sought help in 2003.

He saw a psychologist, started taking anti-depressants, lost 16 kilograms, had teeth removed and replaced with titanium implants and saw a naturopath.

Ten years later he says he’s drug free, eating well, on the right track and in the middle of a punishing concert tour.

“I’ve turned 50 and can do handstands and the splits. I’m enjoying it too much to give up,” he says.

A Galaxy survey of over a thousand Australians has found only one in four men would tell their partner if they had a cold and only 9 per cent would tell their friends.

Conducted for Medibank Private’s 24/7 helpline the survey disproves the myth that men exaggerate the symptoms of the common cold into man flu.

One in two women tell their partners when they are feeling ill and women are 10 per cent more likely to take a day off work if they get a cold, the survey found.

More than four in ten men claim they are not badly affected by the sniffles and more than half of them won’t take medicine to relieve the symptoms.

Dr Georgia Karabatsos says the common cold and ‘man flu’ are often joked about.

“But for some men this can lead to them feeling unable to discuss their health,” she said.

‘It is really important, as a nation, we don’t let the Aussie male stereotype put pressure on the male population to stay silent about ill health or abnormalities.”

Joel Madden and Nicole Ritchie tweet a hang out with The Wiggles

The Daily Telegraph reports

It seems Joel Madden has hit it off with The Wiggles.

Madden tweeted a pic of himself, wife Nicole Richie and kids posing with The Wiggles - Jeff Fatt, Greg Page, Murray Cook and Anthony Field.

"The Madden Family got our Wiggle on today with @itswiggletime thanks The Wiggles!," Madden tweeted.

He then followed up with a photo of himself and The Wiggles with their trademark pose.

"A little but (sic) of Oz in LA chillin with The Wiggles," he wrote.

The starstuck feeling was apparently mutual with Blue Wiggle Field and soon-to-be Red Wiggle Simon Pryce both posting their own tweets and pictures.

"@JoelMadden @nicolerichie No wonder all of Australia loves this guy, nice to meet you mate!" Field wrote.

Seven woos axed yellow Wiggle Sam Moran

Siobhan  Duck, The Herald Sun, reports

'DANCING with the Stars' is among the high-profile gigs being considered by dumped Wiggle Sam Moran.

The huge outpouring of love and support for Moran after his axing from The Wiggles has made him hot property, with magazines and TV networks clamouring to do a deal with him and be the first to get his side of the story.

Though Moran's management team is tight-lipped about the future, he has indicated in his Facebook video to young fans he wants to continue as a children's entertainer.

The ABC and children's pay-TV network Nickelodeon have already expressed interest in doing a show with Moran.

The multi-skilled performer is to make his directorial debut at Tropfest this year.

Seven would not comment on suggestions Moran was in negotiations to dance, but it is believed the network considers performers like him every year when it is casting the show.

Moran would be ratings gold for Seven and it would see him compete against another popular identity unceremoniously dumped - Kerri-Anne Kennerly.

Apart from a brief video statement on his Facebook page, Moran has maintained a dignified silence since being sacked on Tuesday without warning.

Tim Brooke-Hunt, ABC TV executive head of children's television, said he was open to the idea of developing a show with Moran but had not been approached.

Nickelodeon Australia general manager Ben Richardson said it would consider screening a show featuring Moran.

"Sam Moran is a talented performer, and it's evident that his fan base are keen to see him continue to entertain kids," he said.

"In terms of Nickelodeon's interest in him, at this point in time we don't use presenters for our preschool channel, Nick Jr, while on our Nickelodeon channel we have the popular comedic duo Luke and Wyatt as the faces of Nick.

"Having said that, Nickelodeon's always open to possibilities and considering ideas for new projects.

"We certainly wish Sam the best - he's made a lot of kids smile over the past five years."

Rival network Disney, which screens Wiggle and Learn, featuring Moran while he was still the yellow Wiggle, said it had not had talks with him and wouldn't for the "forseeable future".

Wiggles fans were shocked to learn Moran, a father of one and loyal employee of The Wiggles for 10 years, had been forced to hand back his yellow skivvy to Greg Page.

Page left the group five years ago because of ill health and was paid a reported $20 million for his share in the children's entertainment empire.

Page denies returning to the group because of financial problems. Despite being one of the founding members of the group, Page will not return to the fold on equal footing.

Like Moran, Page will be a "salaried Wiggle".

Aussie stars hit by global downturn

Bigpond entertainment reports

Australia's entertainers copped their share of economic woe in 2011, but it's unlikely they'll find a shoulder to cry on.

Though their total earnings were slashed by nearly a third, this year's BRW's Top 50 Entertainment List shows that they still raked in more than $400 million.

Taking pole position for the second year in a row is Global Creatures, the production company behind Walking With Dinosaurs - The Arena Spectacular. The company earned $62 million, which is less than half of its earnings for the previous year.

The Wiggles, currently slugging through a 90-show nationwide tour, gained a spot on last year to wind up in second place with earnings of $28.2 million.

Naomi Watts, whose recent films include Fair Game and the soon-to-be released J. Edgar, bucked the trend by amassing $7 million more than she did in the previous year to wind up third with earnings of $19.1 million.

Michael Gudinski, the man responsible for bringing Justin Bieber, The Foo Fighters and Lionel Richie to Australia, came in fourth.

The veteran music promoter and head of The Frontier Touring Company earned $19 million this year, up a whopping $12 million on 2010.

Screen favourite Nicole Kidman, who pocketed an extra $9 million more that last year, ended up fifth with $18.6 million.

Ageing rockers AC/DC had a hard year, dropping out of the Top 10 after coming in at second place last year.

On the back of their world tour, the band's takings plunged from more than $131.4 million last year to just $9 million this year.

Kylie Minogue can thank her worldwide Aphrodite Les Folies tour, which helped her re-enter the top 10 with earnings of $15 million.

Transformers star Rachael Taylor, whose ongoing personal saga with ex-beau Matthew Newton continued in 2011, debuted on the list at number 49 with a paycheque of $2.4 million.

Mud doesn't seem to stick long for radio bad-boy Kyle Sandilands and sidekick Jackie O.

Despite a string of recent controversies, they made a cool $500,000 on top of last year's salary to cash in $3 million.
