Diana star Naomi Watts is starting to turn heads with her highly developed style and glamour

Once a fashion wallflower, Naomi Watts used to fade into the background alongside more established style-setters like Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman.

But, as the King Kong actor's star power has risen in Hollywood, so has her sense of style. Adopting more daring looks for the ruby rug, fashion commentators agree Watts has revamped her style and is quickly emerging as a fashion favourite.

"Whatever the reason, Naomi has seriously turned up her glamour wattage on the red carpet," GQ Australia editor Nick Smith says.

Smith believes her impressive style evolution has something to do with her recent stint as the world's most adored princess in the highly-anticipated flick Diana.

"Perhaps it's the pressure of playing Princess Diana in the upcoming biopic," he says.

"Surely playing one of the world's most memorable style icons would have you taking stock of your own style.

"Looks to me like she's following one tried and tested rule of fashion: the one of less is definitely more."

Following her Oscar nomination for the Thai tsunami drama The Impossible, Watts has come into her own on the fashion front.

But it's not just her stunning style that has come to life, Watts also seems to be paying more attention to her blonde locks. Gone are her schoolgirl-style ponytails in favour of neatly coiffed hair.

The mother of two has come a long way since her 2011 faux pas when she was critiqued for wearing an unflattering cream parachute dress at the 25th annual Israeli Film Festival VIP reception.

These days, the multiple award-winning actress is impeccably dressed in high-end labels including Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen.

During the recent 3rd Annual Summer Party On The Highline, Watts looked perfectly polished in a button-down See by Chloe shirt dress and at the Up2Us Gala at Tribeca Rooftop in New York City this month, Watts turned heads in Burberry.

However her biggest fashion feat yet was the ultra-glam lace Stella McCartney jumpsuit she wore to the designer's Spring 2014 Collection Presentation in New York this month.

"The one-shouldered lace Stella McCartney jumpsuit looks so sexy and chic on Naomi," designer Jayson Brunsdon says. "With sleek black accessories and smooth hair she looks spectacular but so effortless."

Having known Watts for more than 20 years, Brunsdon has watched the movie star's style develop.

"Naomi's style has evolved into a super chic, clean and sexy minimalist approach that suits her personality perfectly," he says.

"Naomi possesses a minimal, clean and sexy approach to fashion that perfectly complements her personality and body type.

"She's never afraid to embrace something new but she makes it all look effortless and chic."

The Daily Telegraph reports

The first teaser trailer for Diana, the 2013 biopic focusing on the last years of Princess Diana's life has been released online.

In the compelling clip, Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts bears a striking resemblance to the late Princess of Wales, complete with her signature cropped hairstyle and iconic wardrobe.

The minute-long preview promises one thing: "The legend is never the whole story."

The biopic will highlight Diana's humanitarian work, her constant battle with the paparazzi and her highly publicised relationship with Dr. Hasnat Khan, played by Naveen Andrews.

Told from the point of view of her bodyguard, Diana was directed by German filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel.

The long-awaited biopic doesn't have an official release date yet but is slated to open in the UK in September.

Awards hype is already in full swing about Watts's performance, saying she's sure to get some nods during next year's awards season.

Diana movie strikes pap deal to rid itself of pap problem

As a profession, the paparazzi isn't one known for its irony.

But the paps have managed to take it to a new level with its coverage of the Princess Diana movie.

The makers of the film, which chronicles the last two years of the hounded princess's life, are sick of photographers invading their sets to get snaps of Naomi Watts as Diana.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ecosse Films has struck a deal with Splash News & Picture Agency to give it access to the best photo angles in order to head off further tabloid intrusions.

"We knew we would have to deal with the situation, so we got out in front of it," a publicist for the film told the Hollywood Reporter.

The paparazzi problem had become a particularly acute during filming of scenes that recreated Diana's yacht trip with her lover Dodi Fayed.

Diana will be released next year and is directed by Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel.

Watts has said of playing the princess: "This is a first, but I find myself dreaming about her.

"I felt like I was spending time with her. One particular time, I felt that permission was granted."

She said she was hesitant to take on the role of "one of the most famous, if not the most famous, women of my time".

"An awful lot of pressure comes with that, so you want to get it right," she said. "I was dreading people saying, 'she looks nothing like Diana', and 'why her and not somebody else?'. But I couldn't not do it."

Aussie actress Naomi Watts will play Diana, Princess of Wales, in a movie about the tragic British royal, it was announced today.

The Oscar-nominated star will portray the late princess in the forthcoming biopic Caught In Flight, which focuses on the last two years of Diana's life, British company Ecosse Films said.

British-born Watts, 43, is rumoured to have beaten US actress Jessica Chastain to the coveted part of the people's princess.

The Ring actress said, "It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."

Oscar-nominated German director Oliver Hirschbiegel will helm the movie when it begins production in the UK next year, Deadline.com reported.

The Downfall director said, "I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana."

The movie is based on a screenplay by The Libertine playwright Stephen Jeffreys, and will show how the princess finally found true personal happiness and achieved success as an international campaigner and humanitarian.

Watts, who is filming drama The Grandmothers, with Robin Wright, still faces competition from another biopic about the princess - one which will cover the years leading up to her divorce.

Iron Lady producer Stephen Evans is set to make a film based on the book Diana: Closely Guarded Secret, by Diana's former bodyguard Ken Wharfe.

Caught In Flight is the latest in a series of biopics to emerge in recent times.
