Hugh Jackman's "sweaty undershirt'' has sold for $US30,000. The Australian actor was performing his Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway show, which was attended by Hollywood stars Scarlett Johansson and Uma Thurman.

Jackman gave a "shout to his friends'' during the concert, according to the New York Post.

At the end of the show, Jackman auctioned off his "sweaty undershirt'' for charity.

According to the publication, Johansson ran onstage and bid $US3,000 for the actor's piece of clothing, but her offer wasn't impressive enough.

The shirt eventually sold for $US30,000.

Jackman performs with an 18-piece orchestra for the Back on Broadway show and sings his favourite songs.

The star also shares some personal stories with the audience.

When Hugh Jackman asks, the Broadway audience digs deep.

Jackman's one-man show, Back On Broadway, has not only been breaking box office records in New York, but the actor has also been recognised as the lead fundraiser for the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS campaign.

The actor's appeals to the audience after the show managed to raise a whopping $US857,740 ($839,645) in just three weeks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Most of that came from auctions of T-shirts Jackman wore in the show, for which audience members coughed up around $US10,000 each.

"You have no idea how much sex I've been having," Jackman joked about his fundraising efforts when he was honoured during a ceremony at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Tuesday.

The Broadway fundraising effort ran for six weeks, raising a total of $US4.9 million from 53 participating shows.

Hugh's didgeridoos make debut

HUGH Jackman is bringing the sounds of the didgeridoo to American audiences in his Broadway show. 

The stages of New York's theatre district have played host to many unusual sounds over the years - but for US audiences, it is hard to top the strange notes of the didgeridoos.

In Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway, the man from Oz sings Over the Rainbow backed by two of the indigenous instruments, played by Paul Boon and Nathan Mundraby.

Olive Knight, one of Australia's greatest indigenous singers, and her son Clifton Bieundurry provide the vocals.

"We tend to think we're the first didgeridoo players on Broadway, so we're pretty excited about that," said Boon, 41, who hails from Broome.

Jackman asked the musicians to perform with him to raise awareness of his country's indigenous arts. With the exception of Boon, are all Aboriginal and work with the arts organisation Nomad Two Worlds.

"We feel so fortunate to be part of the show," said the 65-year-old Knight, who sings a verse of Over the Rainbow in her native Walmajarri language.

"More people come to the show every night than live in the village that we're from," said her 38-year-old son . Like Knight, Bieundurry was born in Wangkatjungka Community in Western Australia.

"I watch the crowd after I bow, and I can see people crying, so I feel like it's touching a lot of people and introducing them to our culture," he said.

The troupe members, most of whom accompanied Jackman when the show played San Francisco and Toronto, are sampling some new culture, too.

Knight said she was particularly excited about meeting Kirk Douglas, who recently came backstage. "He left me in awe," Knight said. Nevertheless, she said the celebrity she really wants to meet is Goodfellas star Ray Liotta.

For his part, Bieundurry would not mind meeting Jay-Z. (Perhaps Jackman can pull a few strings.)

Boon insisted that he gets more of a kick out of the regular folks in the audience.

"It's great when celebrities come, but there are Hugh fans who are there each and every night," he said.

"They were in San Francisco, Toronto and now New York. They love their Hugh."

"I guess they'd rather have a Hugh-gasm," he added, "than sit at home and watch the Republican presidential debates."

HUGH Jackman is doing what he does best - selling tickets.

The Broadway League says the Tony Award-winning performer's one-man show pulled in more than $1.2 million at the box office during eight preview performances last week.

Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway beat Daniel Radcliffe's How to Succeed in Business and the all-star cast of Stephen Sondheim's Follies the week ending Sunday.

In Jackman's show, he and an 18-piece orchestra perform songs from his stage and film career, including his star turn in The Boy from Oz. The show opens on November 10.

Jackman's pull broke The Broadhurst Theatre's box office record, beating 700 Sundays starring Billy Crystal, Hamlet with Jude Law and The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino.
