The Daily Telegraph reports

Russell Crowe has given a generous shout-out to multiple Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, describing the Lincoln star as his favourite thespian.

Penning a column for Britain's Daily Mail, Crowe says that while his favourite actor of all time is Marlon Brando, Day-Lewis is: "The living actor I admire most."

He also named Papillion - the 1973 penal colony saga - as the movie which changed the way he saw acting.

"When I was 12 I got into a Saturday-morning screening of Papillion," Crowe wrote.

"It was in a seedy theatre at the back of Bondi Junction in Sydney, and there's no way I should have been allowed in, but at that time of day the staff couldn't give a rat's behind," he said, adding; "I watched it again a year ago, and the movie, which stars Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen, still stands tall; until Papillion I didn't know how actors could transport you."
